Issued: Tuesday September 15, 2026

Highlight: Glance at U.S. population weight HDD forecasts for NOV-26 to MAR-27.

Fig. 1: The percent normal U.S. gas population weight HDD forecast by Climate Impact Company for the NOV-26 to MAR-27 cold season.

Discussion: The initial U.S. gas population weight HDD forecast for the 2026-27 cold season reveals a mild regime with each month forecast below the 10-year/30-year climatology (Fig. 1). Regionally, all zones are warmer than normal for NOV-26 to MAR-27 except near the 10-year normal for Texas (Fig. 2). Regionally, the North-central/Upper Midwest U.S. and Northeast States are warmest compared to the 30-year and 10-year climatology. The probabilistic monthly HDD forecast indicates the operational forecast could be much warmer rather than much colder (Fig. 3).
