Highlight: Super El Nino reverses soil moisture trend of the past 3 months.

Discussion: Global soil moisture anomalies analysis from September 2026 reveals many drought areas including Mexico into the Southern U.S., Northern Brazil, Central tropical Africa, Southern India, and parts of Indonesia plus the West and East Coast of Australia (Fig. 1). The most prolific drought is in Europe. Northern Russia is (also) in a drought condition although easing during recent weeks. Wet soil moisture regions include the Ohio Valley, Argentina, Southeast Asia, and trending wetter across Western Russia. The 3-month forecast indicates a reversal due to climate associated with Super El Nino. The large drought area across the Southern U.S. and Mexico may dissipate by year’s end due to a potentially excessive wet climate pattern (Fig. 2). Much wetter climate is (also) expected in U.K. and the Middle East plus South Africa. A wet regime continues in Argentina and extends to Southeast Brazil. Conversely, dry climate enhances Brazil drought, emerges in the Canadian Prairies, continues in India (and expands), while South Africa reverses much drier, and the northwest and southeast portion of Australia shift into drought.
