Discussion: Summer 2026 was the hottest on record in the 1895-2026 U.S. climatology. Included were the hottest summer on record for Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico (Fig. 1). All 48 contiguous states were warmer than normal except Indiana. MUCH ABOVE normal to RECORD warm was observed in 27 states. The national rainfall ranking was in the driest third during the 132-year history (Fig. 2). Regional differences were vast ranking from top ten driest on record in Oregon and California plus South Carolina while the entire Ohio Valley was MUCH WETTER than normal.

August 2026 was the hottest last third of meteorological summer on record (Fig. 3). California and New Mexico observed their hottest months of August on record. One third of the contiguous 48 states were MUCH ABOVE to RECORD warm. Only Indiana was cooler than normal. Indiana and Ohio observed the wettest months of August on record (Fig. 4). The entire Ohio Valley plus New Jersey was MUCH ABOVE normal rainfall during August. Texas and Oklahoma were in the top 5 driest months of August and nationally the U.S. ranked in the top third driest in the 132-year history.
