Discussion: The U.S. gas population weight HDD forecast utilizing all models through the first third of December is shifting colder. The CFS/ECM and AI week 4-6 projections are similar, most notably showing a colder trend for the week ending Jan. 1, 2026. In Chicago, considerable cold weather is ahead!

Discussion: The 6-10-day outlook is coldest near Chicago and the Upper Midwest to Ontario although the Southeast U.S. 24-hour change is much cooler.

Discussion: The effect of snow cover is revealed in the 24-hour change which is colder across the Midwest U.S. to Ontario. Broad cold weather is indicated across Canada to the northeast quadrant of the U.S. Away from snow cover, warming remains indicated.
U.S. Medium-range Precipitation Forecast


Discussion: The U.S. storm track is persistent into the Southwest U.S. The arc of the (Pacific) storm track suggests that significant warming (south of snow cover) is diminished compared to the operational forecasts. The Southeast U.S. is consistently wet through the medium range. Cold reaches the Interior East causing some snow. The Norther States are very snowy.
