Two Major Arctic Outbreaks During One Winter Season
02/20/2025, 5:48 am ESTHighlight: Cold weather (and widening snow cover) emerges Western Russia/Eastern Europe.

Discussion: Late winter chill has emerged across Western Russia, Ukraine, and most of the Black Sea region as the middle third of February arrives (Fig. 1). The chilly weather has extended west to France, Germany, and parts of U.K. The colder weather is enhanced by generation of snow cover, previously unavailable, across Eastern Europe to Southwest Russia (Fig. 2). Western Europe remains snow-free. The latest 7-day temperature forecast utilizing ECM indicates widening and strengthening cold surrounding the Black Sea region with additional snowfall included (Fig. 3). During the widening chill, Southwest Europe to U.K. manages to turn milder. In the 8-14-day period, high pressure yielding widespread milder temperatures is apparent across Northwest Eurasia to Southwest Europe while the cold pattern shifts south into the Middle East (Fig. 4).
