Discussion: The U.S. observed the 19th hottest July in the 131-year climatology. Virginia and West Virginia were hottest on record for mid-summer. The eastern third of the U.S. was MUCH ABOVE normal during July. In July, the U.S. observed the 34th wettest mid-summer on record. Despite the heat, Virginia observed the 6th wettest July on record. Iowa observed their 2nd wettest July on record. Some states were very dry including Utah, Alabama, and Maine.

Discussion: Potent upper trough over East Canada produces an unseasonably cool air mass across Quebec which extends southward to New England. Hot weather lingers south of this air mass Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic States early in the period before turning cooler. Hot weather continues in the Great Plains.

Discussion: Upper ridge anchors over the West as anomalous heat expands. A broad upper trough leaves the East U.S. with near normal temperature.

Discussion: Severe storms with additional heavy rain are likely in the Midwest U.S. in the 6-10-day period. Meanwhil4e, Erin turns northward and stays off the U.S. East Coast. In the 11-15-day period, a broad trough causes showers and thunderstorms in the Southeast States while the Midwest shifts drier and the West Coast is (also) dry.
