07/10/2024, 8:35 am EDTDiscussion: The extremely warm thermal regime across the U.S. during 2024 continued in June. The month of June ranked 2nd hottest in 130-year history (Fig. 1). Record heat was observed in Arizona and New Mexico. Near-record warmth was observed in California, Florida, Utah, Colorado, and Maryland plus all southern New England plus Maine. Only the northern Great Plains were near normal.
June 2024 ranked 41st driest on record (Fig. 2). Extremes were notable. The driest June on record was observed in Virgina while North Carolina was 2nd driest. Meanwhile, the Upper Midwest was wetter than normal including Minnesota which observed their 4th wettest June on record. Surprisingly, the 4-Corners region was wetter than normal.
Quarter 2 (APR/MAY/JUN) of 2024 was 4th warmest on record (Fig. 3). Vermont observed the warmest Q2 on record. Many states were close to an all-time-record warm second quarter of the year.
The 29th wettest second quarter was observed featuring near-record wet weather in the Upper Midwest while the Mid-Atlantic States and West U.S. were drier than normal (Fig. 4).
