Charts of the day: Preliminary December 2024 review.

Discussion: The first month of meteorological winter was split between seasonably cold in the high population areas of Paris to Rome and mild in U.K. plus North and East Europe to Western Russia. Above normal precipitation was observed across Norway/Sweden plus Southeast Europe. Southwest Europe and Western Russia were drier than normal.

Week-2 Ahead Forecast valid January 12-18, 2025: Milder/drier change for Europe.

Discussion: A major forecast change, an upper ridge crests over Northern Europe. The forecast trend is milder. Additionally, widespread dryness spreads from Europe into Western Russia.

Week-3 Ahead Forecast valid January 19-25, 2025: Warmer/drier pattern shift continues.

Discussion: The upper ridge maintains the warmer trend and attendant dry regime for much of Europe. The rain/snow region is across West-central Russia, also a major change.

Week-4 Ahead Forecast valid January 26-February 1, 2025: Europe warm trend continues.

Discussion: No cold air in the forecast as February arrives. Europe stays dry while the Caspian Sea and northeastward are stormy.
