U.S. Autumn 2021 Ranked 3rd Warmest On Record

Autumn 2021 and November 2021 U.S. Temperature/Rainfall Rankings

Discussion: November 2021 was the 7^th warmest in the 127-year climatology (Fig. 1). California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico each ranked 2^nd warmest on record for November. Colorado and Wyoming ranked 3^rd and 4^th respectively. In the East, most of the nation was normally cool. Exceptions were marginal warmth in New England and marginal cool from Indiana to Georgia.  

November 2021 ranked 8^th driest in the 127-year climatology (Fig. 2). Only Washington and Florida were wetter than normal in November. 40 of the 48 contiguous states were drier than normal. The driest states were North Carolina and Alabama (each 5^th driest on record). The Great Basin region ranked 5^th driest on record. The Ohio Valley region ranked 8^th driest on record.

Meteorological autumn (SEP/OCT/NOV) 2021 ranked 3^rd warmest on record (Fig. 3). Almost the entire nation ranked in the MUCH ABOVE normal category including California, the West-central and Southwest U.S., all of the Great Plains and into the Northeast States. Only Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina ranked near normal.

Meteorological autumn ranked 57^th wettest (Fig. 4). Several states ranked MUCH ABOVE normal rainfall including Washington, South Dakota, New York and Massachusetts. The patchy very wet weather across the northern stretch of the U.S. also contained the driest state (Wisconsin ranking 11^th driest on record). The 4 Corners region, Texas and the southern Plains were drier than normal. All of the Northeast States except Vermont were wetter than normal.
