Discussion: January 2023 ranked 6th warmest in the 129-year climatology (Fig. 1). Most of the eastern half of the U.S. was MUCH ABOVE normal during January including all-time-record warmth in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey. January 2023 ranked 18th wettest in the 129-year climatology (Fig. 2). Most of the U.S. was wetter than normal including MUCH ABOVE normal in California to Iowa, Georgia, and much of New England. Nebraska observed their 3rd wettest January on record while Massachusetts received their 4th wettest mid-winter on record.
