Henri’s Potential 5-Day Forecast Track Closer to New England

Henri is forecast to move farther west before a north turn in about 36 hours. Consequently, tropical cyclone models are closer to southeast New England by early next week. Henri will strengthen to a hurricane during the north turn and maintain minimal hurricane strength southeast of New England early next week.

California’s Unique Climate Pattern

From a climate perspective, the accelerant of anomalous heat which is currently at record levels for California for summer 2021 so far is a semi-permanent upper-level high-pressure ridge present much of the time since 2013 and associated with reginal warming of the northeast Pacific Ocean.

Details on Tropical Depression 6

A close look at emerging Tropical Depression 6 indicates a developing system. A tail of convection extends into the deeper tropics implying entrainment of high moisture content tropical air generally associated with intensification. This system has convection in all quadrants around an inner core, also a sign of organization.

Another Record Hot Month for The West Coast in July

California and the rest of the West Coast plus Nevada observed their hottest July on record. Meanwhile, New York and Massachusetts observed their wettest July on record. Overall, the U.S. ranked 6th wettest and 13th warmest given the 127 year climatology in July.

During the past 10 days the upper ocean heat in the equatorial North Atlantic has diminished rapidly and is already approaching the cool (subsurface) peak last November when La Nina 2020-21 peaked.

A long-term established drought across Turkey has expanded westward to Italy and Southeast Europe during summer 2021. The 15-day forecast indicates further westward expansion is possible as hot and dry weather emerges for the middle third of August.

Second Year In A Row Australia Avoids Drought

Australia Bureau of Meteorology indicates soil moisture anomalies across Australia in July are wetter than normal. A negative Indian Ocean Dipole (-IOD) coupled with an expected La Nina ahead favor a wet Australian climate into 2022. For the second year in a row Australia avoids a drought.

Top Forecasters Update The North Atlantic Tropical Cyclone Season Forecast

All primary seasonal forecasts for the North Atlantic tropics are updated. The seasonal forecasts indicated include the activity observed so far. The Climate Impact Company added 1 major hurricane and increased the ACE index. However, both Colorado State University and Tropical Storm Risk U.K. lowered their forecast from previous and are each now very close to Climate Impact Company. The NOAA/NHC forecast increased.

In August 2020 the North Atlantic basin was widespread warmer than normal foreshowing the most active tropical cyclone season on record ahead. However, this year the North Atlantic basin is much cooler!
