Midwest Heavy Rains Continue into Early July; Expansive Heat and Dryness Follows

Hot and dry weather streaks across the southeast quadrant of the U.S. in early July while gully-washer thunderstorms unload on the Midwest States and New Mexico. Nationally, mid-to-late July looks hot and drier. The Gulf of Mexico waits until later July to become active.

Dramatic Cooling of the Gulf of Mexico

The recent heavy rainfall event across Southern Florida shifting westward and into Texas enhanced by Tropical Storm Alberto created plentiful cloudiness, rainfall, and windy conditions to cause the Gulf of Mexico basin to cool to near normal. The 30-day change in Gulf of Mexico basin SST is a remarkable -1.08C.

NOAA Long-lead Climate Forecast Indicates Potential Ferocious Heat in the East U.S. During July

NOAA/CPC probabilistic climate forecasts indicate several high impact hazards ahead for mid-to-late summer 2024. Most striking is the strong probability of persistent heat across the eastern third of the U.S. and Interior West during July.

U.S. Population Weight JUN/JUL/AUG 2024 Forecast Roars to 4th Hottest of This Century

The short-term heat across the high population northeast quadrant of the U.S. is expected to repeat during summer 2024 and consequently the U.S. population weight CDD forecast has increased again. The JUN/JUL/AUG 2024 projection is 1004 CDD ranking 4th hottest of this century trailing only 2016 (1030), 2010 (1020), and 2011 (1014).
