Argentina Looking Wetter (At Times) Next 2 Weeks

Excessive heat haunts the Argentina drought area this week. However, there are some heavy thunderstorms indicated for Central Argentina late this week due to a weak upper-level impulse and possibly more substantial rain next week as a cold front moves into Argentina.

Explaining The “Atmospheric River” Evolution Into California

A very specific set of circumstances convened during late December 2022 and intensifying in early January 2023 to cause what eventually became an “atmospheric river” storm track targeting California for a 3-week period of excessive rainfall (over 50 in. for some locations) and 10’s of feet of snow across the Sierra Nevada.

Stratospheric Warming Event Evolving for Last 1/3 of January is Impressive

Stratospheric warming is forecast to develop and expand in the polar region, the last third of January. In 16 days, the GFS indicates a powerful warming event taking place mostly on the Eurasia side of the North Pole. However, the stratosphere is still cold across the U.S. and eastern North America therefore the arctic air at ground level generated by this event is not easy to forecast by various dynamic models.

La Nina Continues but Dissipation Expected by March and El Nino Risk is There for Second Half of 2023

La Nina is moderate strength right now. Weakening is expected. The weakening of La Nina occurs due to a transient tropical convection oscillation know as the Madden Julian oscillation (MJO) which shuts down trade winds and allows warm subsurface waters to shift eastward from the equatorial subsurface near and west of the Dateline. The second of 4 expected MJO events is occurring now.
