Rapid Stream Flows Ohio and Mississippi Valley

The core of the heavy rain, featuring up to 15 inches across central and northeast Arkansas stretching to the Ohio Valley has abated. However, the attendant flooding and rapid stream flows will continue. Fortunately, a dry period is ahead for the flood zone.

Great Plains and Eventually Europe/Black Sea Region Drought Risk for Summer 2025

Heading into Q2/2025 the primary crop concern for the northern hemisphere is expansion of the Southwest U.S. drought northeast and northward to affect spring wheat, hard red winter wheat, and western soybean/corn growing areas in the Great Plains. A large drought across the Southwest U.S. produces a climate feedback mechanism to the atmosphere enhancing subtropical high pressure ridging which is forced northward by a wet monsoon season in the Southwest U.S. mid-to-late summer.

Great Plains Dry/Drought Risk for Mid-summer

As mid-summer arrives, NCEP/CAS projects widening wet soils in the East while drought risk is highest in the Great Plains. A wet Southwest U.S. Monsoon is expected and weakens parts of the Southwest U.S. drought zone.
