The Influence of SST on Beryl

Beryl’s response to the anomalous warm SST during the early July trek was notable. First, Beryl became a hurricane once SST warmed to 84F in the central North Atlantic tropics. The earliest hurricane on record for this location was born as SST was much above the usual (for July 1) 81-82F SST for this region.

Will Beryl Reach Minimal Category-2 Hurricane Strength at Landfall?

Although initialized 5-6 MB too strong, the HWRF model indicates potential for Beryl to intensify last minute to a minimal category-2 hurricane at landfall around dawn tomorrow morning on the central Texas Coast. The environment just off the Texas coast features little or no upper wind shear and a warm 30C ocean surface to warrant the rapid intensification.

Southeast Europe to Southwest Russia Heat Alert!

Heatwave conditions are likely to continue for Southwest Russia, the Black Sea region, and Southeast Europe. A dry regime is included in this hot zone. The hot weather is an extension to record heat of this week extending across Western Russia where many records were broken.

Western Heatwave is Immense!

In the West, an expanding heatwave has developed. Excessive Heat Warnings cover most of California. The warning is valid through the weekend. Heat Advisories are posted for San Francisco and Los Angeles coastal areas. An Excessive Heat Watch is posted for Phoenix, AZ, Reno, NV, and Eastern Washington where excessive heat is likely to develop.
