Soaking Wet Northeast U.S. Soils

Soaking wet soils are present across the Northwest U.S. and parts of the West Coast. However, our concern in this report is the emerging excessive soil moisture across the northern Mid-Atlantic region and the southern half of New England. The NOAA/WPC 7-day quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF) indicates prohibitive rainfall in the coastal Northeast Corridor region.

AG Market Weather/Climate Research: Mid-Latitude Ocean Forecast Contributes to a Dry Central U.S. Summertime Climate

The summer 2024 forecast is most confident over North America where elevated drought risk is forecast for the Great Plains and Canadian Prairies. Forecast confidence is lower for the Europe outlook as timing of drought differs from summertime for Western Europe according to CFS to mid-to-late summer by the CIC forecast centered on France and the Black Sea region.

Upper Ocean Heat to Support El Nino Almost Gone

The upper ocean heat required to support El Nino is almost gone east of the Deadline. Subsurface warmth remains near the Dateline but is sharply cooler in the east-central and far east subsurface region. Anomalous warmth required in the subsurface to sustain El Nino is fading fast.

Relentless Warm U.S. Forecasts Continue

The warm pattern is relentless. Combining the GFS and ECM yields more prohibitive warmth across much of North America in the medium range. There are signs of cooler weather in 15 days. The U.S. gas population weight HDD forecast trend is much warmer since Friday.
