Heavy Rains Ahead But Mostly South of the Kansas D4 Drought Zone

Beneficial rainfall is ahead for the D4 drought area in Kansas. However, trend of the weekend forecast models is for the heaviest rain to strike just to the south across Oklahoma. Significant easing of drought in Oklahoma is likely.

Projecting May 5-7 Snow Cover Dissipation Dates for Northern Plains/Upper Midwest

The late April 2023 snow cover across the northern Great Plains and Upper Midwest is rare but not unprecedented. Since 1998 (when satellite snow cover is easily attainable) late April significant snow cover across the northern Great Plains and Upper Midwest occurred in 2013, 2017, and 2022.

Late Season Northern U.S. Snow Cover Deepens, Likely To Last Into May

A difficult weather pattern for U.S. agriculture with a late season chill lasting into May allowing northern Plains snow cover to hang on into May. There may be additional snowfall! Some beneficial rains for parts of the Great Plains in the 10-day outlook.
