Saharan Dust and upper shear are suppressing tropical cyclone development now. The environment supporting tropical cyclone development improves by the middle third of August. Hurricanes threatening the U.S. Coast, primarily Florida, is indicated by ECMWF for the last third of August.

NOAA Long-lead Probability Climate Forecast Implicate Florida for Hurricane Risk in August

The month ahead outlook valid for August 2024 identifies above normal temperature risk for the entire U.S. particularly in the Great Basin and central Appalachians. The probabilistic rainfall outlook has increased confidence for a wet pattern in the Gulf States, Florida, and Carolinas. The wet zone is a candidate for land-falling tropical cyclones in August.

Southeast Europe/Black Sea Region Drought Continues

A major drought is in-place across Southeast Europe and Western Turkey. Drought ALERT is widespread in these areas according to the Europe Drought Observatory (EDO). The NOAA/CPC daily soil moisture analysis identifies the Southeast Europe drought extension to Southwest Russia including most of the Black Sea region.
