Climate Impact: Solar flare alert today. Begin time 2:30 EDT. Risk to satellite systems (see below).

NASA: Space Weather Message Code: ALTEF3 Serial Number: 2760

Issue Time: 2018 Apr 12 0859 UTC

CONTINUED ALERT: Electron 2MeV Integral Flux exceeded 1000pfu

Continuation of Serial Number: 2759 Begin Time: 2018 Apr 10 1830 UTC

Yesterday Maximum 2MeV Flux: 11644 pfu NOAA Space Weather Scale descriptions can be found at www.swpc.noaa.gov/noaa-scales-explanation

Potential Impacts: Satellite systems may experience significant charging resulting in increased risk to satellite systems.

Interestingly, the solar flare alert occurs while the sun is largely very inactive. The solar minima, which occurs every 11.5 years has started about 1 year ahead of the NASA forecast.
